From Struggling With Mandarin to Getting Nominated for Golden Melody Award
CLARIS LOH interviews the singer-songwriter who recorded herself speaking Mandarin repeatedly to perfect it when she returned to Taiwan after immigrating to Canada

Ms Anie Fann, 37, Singer-songwriter, returned to Taiwan from Canada struggling with Mandarin. Today, Ms Fann confidently shares her unconventional thoughts by singing in  Mandarin.

At a young age, Ms Fann and her family uprooted to Canada where her passion for music grew. Due to Ms Fann’s upbringing in Canada, she barely spoke Chinese. “I've always written music in English and listened to English music from a young age when I was living in Canada and studying in the US,” she says.

When Ms Fann returned to her home country to pursue her music career, she realised she had to write and sing in Mandarin. Ms Fann persevered and eventually started writing music in Mandarin. “It was through a lot of recording myself speaking and singing in Chinese. I would replay it to listen if it's fluent and ask myself, ‘Why does that sound weird?’” she says. This inspired her debut album, Can you or Can You Not Understand My Mandarin which was nominated for a Golden Melody Award (GMA) in 2018 for Best Vocal Recording Album (Technical Category).

“I was over the moon when the album was nominated! The nomination is for the engineers who worked on my album and I was thrilled because the whole team was super professional,” Ms Fann says, adding that her Mandarin had improved tremendously by then.

Andy Wong, 38, Ms Fann’s husband, started out as a fan of hers.

Mr Wong attended one of Ms Fann’s concerts in Taiwan as an audience member. “I was so entranced and intrigued by her voice, songs and charisma,” he says. One thing led to another and now they are happily married.

Mr Wong never fails to show up at every event Fann holds, be it in Taiwan or Singapore. Mr Wong recalls selling Ms Fann’s debut album CDs to the audience at a music festival in Taiwan as she performed. “I’m always trying to help her do whatever she doesn't have time for as she is very occupied,” he says.

Ms Fann’s music often discusses underrepresented and niche topics, such as the dark side of social media and our modern technological advancements which her fans find unique. “You could verbally say ‘I love you’ to someone or you could sing them a love song,” she continued, “their reaction would be different”.

Jocelle Koh, 26, music journalist, first came across Ms Fann’s music while researching on the 2018 GMAs for an article. “I think Anie’s music is very introspective, it's very introverted, and I think that's something that we don't see enough of,” Ms Koh says. According to Ms Koh, other artists tend to focus on romance and sadness. On the other hand, Ms Fann is often inspired by a variety of unconventional topics ranging from deep fakes and artificial intelligence, evident in her latest album, Artemis 1889

Ms Koh became a fan of Ms Fann’s music when she found herself relating to one of the songs from the debut album, ‘I’m Sorry Dad I Fell In Love With A Job That Makes No Money’. The song discusses expectations parents have for their child and mainly focuses on the negative reaction given when one chooses to pursue an arts related career. Although the song discusses a serious topic, it is an upbeat song with a comedic touch to it.

The song, ‘I’m Sorry Dad I Fell In Love With A Job That Makes No Money’ impacted Ms Fann’s listeners, especially fellow musicians the most. “People really hear their own stories in the song. Even though it's supposed to be funny, it really sends the message across,” Ms Fann says.

“I trust that Anie’s artistry is so special as she always comes up with something that you wouldn't be able to think of,” Koh says, “it makes you experience music in a new way and will always give you food for thought.”

Ms Fann often counts on the support of her fans, family and friends in mind when she loses motivation in her work. “As an indie artist, my final reward is not monetary. My final reward is music. It’s when my audience enjoys, relates and gets something out of my music which warms my heart,” she says.

The Unknown Attraction of Sentosa, Mount Imbiah Trail
CLARIS LOH explores one of the hidden gems of Sentosa, Mount Imbiah Trail, away from the bustle of the busy island

If you think visiting Sentosa means burning a hole in your pocket, well, you thought wrong! Hidden away behind the popular and busy attractions of Sentosa lies a free attraction, Mount Imbiah Nature Trail

Mount Imbiah hill is 80m high and 2.3km in length. It might sound like a short hike, however, hikers will hear, smell and see distinct floral and fauna while hiking. I was one to experience that.

I recommend starting your hike at their latest installation, Sentosa Nature Discovery. Through the exhibition I understood more about the traits of animals and plants inhabiting Mount Imbiah before embarking on the hike. The exhibition even included tips for the trail explaining what hikers need, activities they can do, animals to be wary of and safety precautions.

Once I stepped out of the Sentosa Nature Discovery, I was greeted with the sight of a magnificent tree-top walk. The tree-top walk is a must visit at Mount Imbiah! The view of the tall trees engulfing the trail was breathtaking and the fresh air was soothing. The sight was clear of high-rise buildings and city life, making it unfamiliar yet relaxing for me.

As my trail progressed, the comfortable wooden tiles soon led to rocky grounds with fallen tree branches, twigs and leaves where I tripped multiple times because . I was often engrossed with the sights and sounds of nature.

It was 15 minutes into the hike when I realised I was itching all over from insect bites. I desperately asked the hikers in front of me, Ms Verrin Soh, 49 and her daughter, Ms Cassie Koh, 12, for insect repellent. They kindly shared theirs with me and I found that their hike at Mount Imbiah is a weekly affair.

Ms Soh says, “I visit with my daughter weekly as an escape from the busy city life. The sky here is filled with forestation instead of the buildings we see everyday, it’s really refreshing and relaxing,”

Along the hike, Ms Koh pointed out various animals such as the Golden Orb Spider and Olive-backed sunbird.

The huge size of the Golden Orb spider and its web took me by surprise as it was my first time seeing a spider that big. Although I was frightened, I knew I had to snap a picture to document my exciting discovery. Remember to never use your flash when photographing them!

Ms Koh says, “Hiking at Mount Imbiah made me grow an interest in wildlife, especially animals. Observing such animals in their natural habitat amazes me. Every time I visit, I gain more new information about wildlife! I get to bond with my mum during hikes too.”

Although animals were exciting to spot on the trail, some could potentially be dangerous such as scorpions and hornets. Ms Soh would not advise children below the age of 10 to hike on this nature trail as it can be steep and rocky at some points and children might go too close to wild animals out of curiosity. The weather could also be a problem as there are no places to seek shelter along the trail.

It took me approximately an hour to complete the trail. Mount Imbiah truly is a hidden gem! I would definitely recommend it to nature and hiking lovers or someone who is simply looking for a break from city life.

If guests are planning to visit Mount Imbiah Nature Trail, they should wear light and comfy exercise clothing. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Always remember to hydrate throughout the hike!
